Water Softeners for Car Washes and Laundromats
Water softeners for car washes and laundromats remove the calcium and magnesium that waste soap and leave spots. Car washes put a softener ahead of reverse osmosis for a spot-free rinse; laundromats soften the washer feed and water heater supply.

On this page
Quick answer
- Car washes: softener first, then RO for the spot-free rinse.
- Laundromats: soften the water heater feed and washer supply.
- High flow and long hours usually mean twin or multi-tank systems.
- Ranked first: SoftPro Pro Series; second: the QWT Pentair Fleck commercial line.
- Size by peak gpm, then daily gallons × hardness.
How commercial softening works
Calcium and magnesium are the minerals behind hardness. They react with soap and detergent, so more product goes into every wash, and they leave white spots when water dries on paint and glass. A softener pulls those minerals out on ion-exchange resin, swapping them for sodium (or potassium). Once the beads are spent, the control valve backwashes the bed, draws brine from the salt tank, rinses and returns to service. Read how a water softener works for each step.
Where softening earns its keep in these businesses:
- Car-wash presoak, soap and wax arches: chemicals work with less product in soft water.
- Spot-free rinse: reverse osmosis removes the dissolved solids that leave spots, and a softener ahead of the RO keeps hardness scale off its membranes.
- Hot-water systems: water heaters and boilers scale fastest, so they need soft feed water.
- Laundromats and on-premise laundries: detergent works better, and washer valves, heaters and dryer-side steam equipment stay cleaner.
- Boiler feed and cooling-tower make-up: softened make-up water slows scale in both.
Sizing
Car washes are about flow. Several bays, a tunnel, the RO pump and a hot-water heater may all draw water in the same minute, so the valve must pass that peak without a big pressure drop. Laundromats are about bursts: dozens of washers can open their fill valves together.
Our commercial sizing guide works a full car-wash example: 150 cars a day at 35 gallons each (5,250 gallons), 20 gpg plus 0.5 ppm of ferrous iron (22.5 gpg compensated), or 118,125 grains a day. With a 45 gpm peak and the RO refilling overnight, that points to a duplex near 300,000 grains per tank, or a multi-tank system.
Here is a laundromat, using example assumptions: 30 washers, 8 loads each a day, 25 gallons a load; 14 gpg hardness, no iron; 30 gpm peak; open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Gallons per day: 30 × 8 × 25 = 6,000.
- Grains per day: 6,000 × 14 = 84,000.
- Usable capacity, taking an efficient salt setting as about 75% of rated (example assumption).
- SoftPro Pro Series single, 135,000 rated: 135,000 × 0.75 = 101,250 usable ÷ 84,000 = about 1.2 days, so it regenerates most nights after close.
- Fleck 2900S NXT2 single, 210,000 rated: 210,000 × 0.75 = 157,500 usable ÷ 84,000 = about 1.9 days, so roughly every other night.
- Configuration: with eight closed hours a night, one tank can regenerate after hours. A 24-hour laundromat needs twin-alternating.
Check the 30 gpm peak too: QWT gives the 2900S NXT2 a 40–100 gpm range, while SoftPro does not publish flow per model, so confirm it with SoftPro's sizing team.
| Business | Water need | Suggested setup | Example systems |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-serve car wash, few bays | Moderate flow, long hours | Twin-alternating | SoftPro duplex from $5,299; Fleck 9500 SXT twin from $5,779 (40 gpm) |
| In-bay automatic or tunnel with RO | High flow, overnight RO refill | Duplex or multi-tank | Fleck 2900S NXT2 duplex from $9,845 (40–100 gpm); SoftPro triplex from $7,749 |
| Large tunnel or industrial plant | Very high flow | Large duplex or quadraplex | Fleck 3900 NXT2 duplex from $17,100 (250 gpm); SoftPro quadraplex from $10,189 |
| Laundromat, closed overnight | Burst fills | Single tank | SoftPro single from $2,179; Fleck 2900S NXT2 single from $5,355 |
| 24-hour laundry | Burst fills, no downtime | Twin-alternating | SoftPro duplex; Fleck 9500 SXT twin |

Costs
Equipment starts at a few thousand dollars for one small tank and climbs into the $10,000–$30,000+ range for big twin and multi-tank systems, plus installation. Salt is the main ongoing cost, usually $5–$10 a bag (40 lb), plus regeneration water. SoftPro's Pro Series listing carries one customer case study, from a car wash, in which the high-efficiency design reported 50% salt savings, up to 38% water savings and 47% operating savings compared with a traditional system; the listing says other applications may see different results. The commercial cost guide estimates monthly salt for the 118,125-grain car wash.
Recommended systems
Systems for car washes and laundries
1. SoftPro Pro Series Commercial
Single tanks for laundromats that close overnight; duplex, triplex and quadraplex for car washes, with capacities to 270,000 grains and prices starting at $2,179 (October 2026). Extra tanks come online as demand rises, which suits bursty loads. Our Pro Series write-up has the full spec list.
2. Pentair Fleck commercial, sold by QWT
The pick when you want published flow and big capacity: 9500 SXT twin to 300,000 grains at 40 gpm, 2900S NXT2 to 600,000 grains at 40 to 100 gpm, and 3900 NXT2 duplex to 1,200,000 grains at 250 gpm. Prices start at $1,448 (October 2026). See our Fleck commercial review.

Installation and upkeep
Car washes and laundries are hard on drains and floors, so plan these early:
- Backwash drain: Per QWT, the 9500 SXT backwashes at 16 gpm and the 3900 NXT2 at 100 gpm; the drain and any reclaim system must accept it.
- Placement: keep the softener on the cold side, ahead of the water heater, boiler and RO. The SoftPro Pro Series is listed for 39 to 100 F.
- Pre-treatment: well water with red iron or a sulfur smell needs a dedicated filter first; city water benefits from carbon ahead of the resin and RO.
- Salt handling: big systems use a lot of salt, so plan pallet storage near the brine tank and use clean pellets or solar crystals.
- Testing: check softened water hardness weekly and before the RO, since hardness leaking through scales the membranes.
Resin wears faster on chlorinated water; our resin replacement guide covers re-bedding. For an overview of configurations, see the commercial water softeners buyer's guide.
Common questions
Does a car wash need a softener if it has reverse osmosis?
Usually yes. Hard water scales RO membranes, so a softener ahead of the RO protects it, and soft water also helps presoak and soap chemicals work with less product.
What size softener does a car wash need?
It depends on cars per day, gallons per car, hardness and peak flow. Our worked example of 150 cars a day at 22.5 gpg compensated hardness came to 118,125 grains a day and a duplex near 300,000 grains per tank rated for 45 gpm.
Will softened water save a laundromat money on detergent?
Soft water lets detergent clean with less product, and it keeps scale out of water heaters and washer valves. How much you save depends on your hardness and current dosing, so track detergent use before and after.
Can a softener feed a boiler?
Yes, softened boiler feed and make-up water is a standard use. Install the softener on the cold supply; the SoftPro Pro Series is listed for 39 to 100 F, and Culligan sells a separate hot water softener.
Single tank or twin tank for a laundromat?
A laundromat that closes overnight can use one tank that regenerates after hours. A 24-hour laundry, or one whose daily grains exceed what one tank holds, needs twin-alternating so soft water never stops.
