Best Water Softeners for Iron and Sulfur

A water softener alone handles only a few ppm of clear-water iron; for more iron, manganese or a rotten-egg smell, the best setup is the SoftPro Elite Smart HE well softener paired with SoftPro's AIO Iron Master filter.

How we chose

Iron is where many softener listings overpromise, so we ranked on what each maker actually publishes about iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, and on which part of the system those numbers belong to. A ppm limit printed for an iron filter is not a ppm limit for the softener beside it, and we kept those apart. We also weighed whether a system is sold as a matched set sized by well-pump flow, the published warranty and the price as of October 2026. Owned systems are listed first; the competitor follows with its stated strengths.

#1 SoftPro Elite Smart HE (well) + iron filter

SoftPro sells its Elite Smart HE well softener two ways. "Softener ONLY" is labelled for "hardness only (no iron or odor issues)." "SOFTENER + SoftPro AIO Iron Master" adds a separate iron filter filled with Katalox Light, a catalytic media that SoftPro credits with taking out as much as 30 ppm of iron and 7 ppm of manganese, along with hydrogen sulfide (no sulfide ceiling given). That labelling is honest: the iron and sulfur work is done by the filter, and the softener then handles hardness.

The bundle is priced by your well pump's flow rate (6–7, 8–10 or 11+ gpm), because a backwashing iron filter must be sized to the water the pump can deliver. Prices as of October 2026 start at $2,827 for 32,000 grains at 6–7 gpm and reach $3,367 for 64,000 grains at 11+ gpm. The filter has its own 1-inch valve, LCD, automatic backwash and battery backup, and installs upstream of the softener.

The softener itself uses 10% crosslink resin, which SoftPro says resists chlorine degradation and iron fouling, and a downflow control valve programmed for well water, with metered regeneration. The page also mentions a fine mesh resin upgrade for elevated ferrous iron, though it is not a selectable option. The page shows an "NSF / WQA / ANSI Certified" badge but never names a standard or says what it covers. On coverage, SoftPro gives the valve and essential components a limited lifetime warranty and adds a 6-month money-back guarantee. Full details are in the SoftPro Elite review.

#2 Fleck 2510SXT (QWT)

Quality Water Treatment's Fleck 2510SXT is built for well water with fine mesh resin, and the listing is specific about limits. QWT caps the basic softener at 3 ppm where the iron arrives clear, and holds manganese to 1 ppm. Add-on packages cover the rest: KDF 85 for up to 2 ppm of sulfur, a calcite pH neutralizer for acidity in the 6.0 to 6.9 range, and an AIO iron filter that QWT rates at 30 ppm for iron, 7 ppm for manganese and 5 ppm for hydrogen sulfide.

Softener peak flow is published by size: 7 gpm at 24,000 grains, 9 at 32,000, 12 at 40,000, 14 at 48,000 and 16 at 64,000. Once a filter is added, the filter sets the system flow. The valve is the Fleck 2510SXT digital metered unit with a 48-hour capacitor backup. The warranty is 5 years on the control valve and 10 years on the mineral and brine tanks. The only certification wording is for the calcite filter's backwash valve.

QWT lists the softener on its own from $1,494.04 (October 2026); softener-plus-iron-filter packages start at $2,334, and a softener-plus-pH package sits at $1,218.62. Package prices vary with the filter stages included, so compare the exact package you need. More in our best water softeners for well water.

Best for buyers who want a lab test first

SpringWell WSSS well combo

  • Contents: well water iron filter (WS1 or WS4) plus SpringWell's salt-based softener
  • Iron filter: SpringWell's standalone filter page gives limits of 7 ppm for iron, 1 ppm for manganese, 8 ppm for hydrogen sulfide
  • Flow: iron filter 12 gpm (WS1) or 20 gpm (WS4)
  • Price (Oct 2026): from $3,123.75; a well water test is a required add-on
  • Why it ranks here: SpringWell holds well orders until test results are in, which helps match the system to the water.

Sold by its maker; we do not link to other brands.

SpringWell's combo is a sensible one-box answer for moderate iron and sulfur, and its required test is a genuine strength. The page shows lifetime-warranty and six-month money-back badges. Compare it head to head in SoftPro vs SpringWell or read the SpringWell review.

Two other notes. SoftPro's ECO Well softener uses fine mesh resin, and its page states that above 0.3 ppm iron the Softener + Pro Iron Filter package "is required, not optional." And some lower-priced softeners publish clear-water iron ratings for the softener alone: Whirlpool lists 10 ppm for the WHES40 and Morton lists 9 ppm for the M34. See the Whirlpool review and Morton review.

How to choose

Get a lab test of the well before buying anything. You need total iron, ferrous versus ferric iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, pH and hardness. Then match the equipment to the results.

Softener resin will trade away a little dissolved iron along with hardness. That works for ferrous (clear-water) iron in the low single digits of ppm, if the resin suits it. It cannot handle iron that has already oxidized (red or orange water, ferric iron), iron bacteria (slimy red-brown deposits in the toilet tank), higher iron levels, or hydrogen sulfide. Those need a dedicated iron or sulfur filter ahead of the softener. Always defer to the maker's stated limits, and treat a limit printed for a filter as the filter's limit only.

Iron also eats capacity. For sizing, a ppm of ferrous iron behaves like 4 or 5 more gpg, and a ppm of manganese like about 2 more. Four people on 12 gpg water with 2 ppm iron should size for 20–22 gpg: about 6,600 grains a day, or 46,000 a week, which points to a 64,000-grain softener. Our sizing guide has the full method.

Which setup fits your well

Clear water, iron under about 3 ppm

A fine mesh or iron-rated softener can manage it within the maker's limit; regenerate often.

Red water or iron bacteria

Install an iron filter first; resin alone will foul.

Rotten-egg smell

Hydrogen sulfide needs a catalytic or oxidizing filter rated for it, or KDF for low levels.

Iron above 3 ppm or manganese

Use a matched iron filter sized to your pump's gpm, then the softener.

Acidic water (pH below 7)

Add a calcite neutralizer ahead of the softener; low pH water can corrode plumbing.

The usual order is well pump, pressure tank, iron or sulfur filter, softener. Iron fouling shortens resin life, so plan on resin cleaning or resin replacement sooner than on clean water.

Common questions

Will a water softener remove iron?

A little. Resin can take out low single-digit ppm of ferrous iron, the kind that comes out of the tap clear, as long as you stay inside the maker's published limit. Oxidized iron, iron bacteria and higher levels need an iron filter installed ahead of the softener.

How much iron can a water softener handle?

It depends on the resin and the maker. QWT rates its Fleck 2510SXT softener for clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, and SoftPro sells its Elite well softener without a filter only for "hardness only" water. Above those limits, add a filter.

Does a water softener remove sulfur smell?

No. Hydrogen sulfide needs a dedicated filter, such as a catalytic media filter or, for low levels, KDF media. QWT rates its KDF 85 stage for up to 2 ppm of sulfur.

Do you need an iron filter and a softener?

If the well has more than a few ppm of iron, any manganese, or a sulfur smell, yes. The filter removes iron and sulfur; the softener removes hardness. Each protects the other's performance.

Where does the iron filter go?

After the pressure tank and before the softener, so the softener receives water with the iron already removed. Both SoftPro and QWT describe that order for their iron filter bundles.

Does iron change the softener size?

Yes. Treat every ppm of ferrous iron as 4 to 5 more gpg, and every ppm of manganese as about 2 more. That often moves a home up one size.
