Verdict
The Rheem Preferred RHS32 is among the lowest-priced whole-house softeners with a full spec sheet, and it is easy to buy off the shelf. It suits a household of three or four on moderately hard water that wants a low price, a stated service flow, and a ten-year tank warranty. Rheem says the series is "designed, engineered and manufactured right here in the USA."
Who it suits: three to four people on city water or well water with modest dissolved iron, who would rather pick one up at a big-box store than order online.
Who should skip it: larger households, homes with significant iron (no ppm limit is published), and buyers who want the control valve covered beyond the first year. See our best water softeners for well water if iron is the main problem.

What it does well
Price. At $489 as listed at Home Depot in October 2026, the RHS32 is among the least expensive whole-house softeners we cover, and it was in stock for delivery on the listing.
A complete set of numbers. Service flow, hardness ceiling, water per regeneration and regeneration time are all stated. Twenty-four gallons per regeneration is a useful figure for anyone on a septic system or a metered water bill.
Salt claim with a footnote. Rheem claims "40% less salt is used than with traditional water softeners," and is upfront that this is "based on the manufacturer's internal laboratory testing." Treat it as the maker's figure, but the disclosure is welcome.
US-made with a long tank term. The tanks carry ten years and the electronics three.
RHS32 pluses and minuses
Good: low price
$489 listed at Home Depot for the 32,000-grain model (Oct 2026).
Good: published water use
24 gallons and 120 minutes per regeneration.
Watch: iron figure missing
"Iron reduction" in the name, but no ppm limit.
Watch: modest flow
8 gpm at a 15 psi drop.
Where it falls short
Iron limit not stated. The product title says "Iron Reduction" and Rheem's page says it removes clear-water (ferrous) iron, but no maximum ppm is published. If your water test shows iron, you can't confirm the RHS32 is rated for it.
Service flow. Eight gpm at a 15 psi drop is fine for one or two bathrooms in use at once. Larger homes with several showers running may notice a pressure drop.
One year on parts and labor. After year one, coverage is limited to the electronics (three years) and tanks (ten years) unless you extend the base term. Rheem lets you stretch the 1-year term to as long as 5 years if you use Rheem Water Softener Cleaner regularly.
Capacity. At 32,000 grains the RHS32 is sized for three or four people; at very hard water above 10.5 gpg, even that household may need to size up.
No certification published. Neither the retailer listing nor Rheem's page states an NSF or WQA certification.
Price and warranty
As of October 2026, Home Depot listed the RHS32 at $489, the RHS42 at $589 and the RHW42 at $689. Add installation (typically about $200 to $1,000 if a plumber does it) and salt at $5 to $10 per 40-lb bag. Our cost guide has full budgets.
Warranty, per Rheem and the listing: one year parts and labor, three years on electronics, ten years on tanks, with the one-year term extendable up to five years when Rheem Water Softener Cleaner is used regularly.
How it compares with our picks
For a few hundred dollars more, the city version of the SoftPro ECO runs from $967 (October 2026) and adds 48,000 and 64,000-grain sizes. ECO City coverage is a lifetime limited warranty for the mineral tank and brine tank plus a 10-year control-valve warranty, and SoftPro claims a 10% salt saving versus traditional systems.
Our #1 pick, SoftPro's Elite Smart HE, costs from $1,327 and includes a limited lifetime warranty on its valve and essential components. Quality Water Treatment's Fleck 5600SXT sits between them at $1,189 and up, with a five-year control-valve term.
The Rheem's case is simple: low upfront cost and off-the-shelf availability. Ours cost more but cover the valve far longer. Our full rankings show where each lands.
