Quick answer

  • SoftPro Elite 32K: $1,327 (well). SpringWell SS1 32K: $1,606.50.
  • SoftPro's well bundle is rated for up to 30 ppm iron; SpringWell's iron filter page says 7 ppm.
  • SpringWell has an 80K size and published gpm; SoftPro tops out at 64K.
  • Both offer a 6-month money-back guarantee and lifetime warranty wording.
  • Most homes up to 64,000 grains: SoftPro. Very large homes: SpringWell SS+.

Quick verdict

For most households, we pick SoftPro. The SoftPro Elite Smart HE costs less than SpringWell's SS line at every size both sell, comes with a bypass valve, quantifies its salt savings, and its well-water iron bundle carries a much higher stated iron rating. The budget SoftPro ECO undercuts SpringWell by a wider margin. SpringWell earns its place for very large homes: the 80,000-grain SS+ and its published 20 gpm service flow have no direct SoftPro match.

Capacity and performance

The Elite comes in 32K, 40K, 48K and 64K tanks; the ECO skips 40K but otherwise matches. SpringWell's SS line jumps from 48,000 to 80,000 grains, so a family that needs around 64,000 grains of headroom pays for the 80K tank at SpringWell. Use our sizing guide to work out daily grains before choosing.

On flow, SpringWell publishes 11, 13 and 20 gpm service flows. Neither the Elite nor the ECO page gives a service-flow number; the Elite well version is built with 1-inch internal plumbing, and SoftPro states there is no reduction in water pressure, or very little. If your home has many bathrooms in use at once and you want a documented gpm figure, SpringWell has the clearer spec sheet.

For well water with iron, the gap is wider. The Elite well bundle adds an AIO Iron Master filled with Katalox Light; SoftPro's figures for it are 30 ppm of iron and 7 ppm of manganese, and it also treats hydrogen sulfide. SpringWell's WSSS combo page gives no iron limit; the separate SpringWell iron filter listing tops out at 7 ppm iron, with 1 ppm manganese and 8 ppm sulfide. SpringWell does require a "Level 1 + Bacteria" water test before a well order ships, which is a sensible safeguard. Our best well water softeners list ranks both.

On certification, the Elite product page lists NSF, WQA and ANSI but gives no standard number. SpringWell publishes no certification for its softeners.

Upkeep and running costs

Both are metered softeners that regenerate by water used. SoftPro gives more detail on what that means at home: it states the well Elite regenerates about every 4 to 7 days depending on use, the city Elite about every 14 days, and that a typical household uses one 40 lb bag of salt every 2 to 4 months. The city Elite can skip up to 10 backwash cycles on clean city water, per SoftPro. SpringWell's claim is general and gives no figure.

Installation is DIY-friendly for both. SoftPro says most Elite installs take two to four hours with basic plumbing tools, and every Elite includes a bypass valve. SpringWell sells the bypass as an extra. The Elite needs a drain and a 110V outlet. For general upkeep, see how long water softeners last.

Price and warranty

In October 2026 pricing, a well-water Elite costs $1,327 at 32K and $1,477 at 64K; the city Elite costs $1,367 to $1,587. ECO models begin at $947 for wells and $967 for city homes. On the SpringWell side, the three SS sizes cost $1,606.50, $1,785.00 and $2,677.50. Well bundles start at $2,827 for SoftPro and $3,123.75 for SpringWell's WSSS1. Both state free shipping.

Warranty wording is close on paper. SoftPro words the Elite's coverage as limited lifetime, and it applies to the control valve plus what SoftPro calls essential components. SpringWell's badge says lifetime, and its warranty tab lists lifetime cover on fittings, tanks, housings, bypasses, valves and heads, with separate 10-year terms on larger tanks and 5-year terms on solid-state electronic heads. Both offer a 6-month money-back guarantee; SpringWell's covers only unused systems, minus 10% if the return is not for a defect.

On salt-free, SoftPro's FORTRESS Pro is $529 and SpringWell's FutureSoft FS1 is $1,785.00; both list a 75 gpg hardness limit. FutureSoft has the longer warranty (lifetime badge versus FORTRESS's 1-year limited). Our salt-free roundup covers them in detail.

Which should you choose?

Which to choose

Choose SoftPro if

You need up to 64,000 grains, want the lower price at each size, have well water with iron above 7 ppm, or want the bypass valve included. Start with the SoftPro Elite Smart HE for well water (a store we own).

Choose SoftPro ECO if

Budget is the priority. It starts at $947, and the city version carries a lifetime limited warranty on its tanks plus 10 years on the valve; read the SoftPro ECO review.

Choose SpringWell if

You need more than 64,000 grains in one tank, want a published gpm rating, or prefer a test-first well order. See our full SpringWell review.

Common questions

Is SoftPro better than SpringWell?

For most homes up to 64,000 grains, we rank SoftPro first on price, the included bypass and a higher-rated iron bundle. SpringWell is the better fit when you need an 80,000-grain tank or a published flow rate.

Which is cheaper, SoftPro or SpringWell?

SoftPro, as of October 2026. A 32,000-grain Elite is $1,327 for well water against $1,606.50 for the SpringWell SS1, and the SoftPro ECO starts at $947.

Which handles iron better?

SoftPro, by a wide margin on paper: 30 ppm of iron for its AIO Iron Master bundle versus 7 ppm on SpringWell's iron filter listing.

Do both brands make salt-free systems?

Yes. SoftPro sells the FORTRESS and Elite Salt-Free; SpringWell sells FutureSoft. None of them softens water; they condition minerals to reduce scale.
