How Much a Commercial Water Softener Costs
A commercial water softener costs from a few thousand dollars for a small single-tank unit to $10,000–$30,000 or more for a large twin or multi-tank system, before installation, salt and drain water.

Quick answer
- Small single-tank units: a few thousand dollars.
- Large twin or multi-tank systems: $10,000 to $30,000 and up.
- SoftPro Pro Series from $2,179; QWT Pentair Fleck from $1,448 (Oct 2026).
- Installation is extra and depends on plumbing, drain and code.
- Salt: typically $5–$10 a 40-lb bag of pellets or crystals.
How commercial softening works
Price follows the job the system does. Hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) are caught on resin beads and swapped for sodium or potassium. When the resin fills, the valve regenerates with brine and sends the rinse to drain. Every part of that cycle has a cost: the resin volume you buy up front, the valve that controls it, the salt in each brine draw and the water flushed away. Bigger valves pass more gallons per minute, and more tanks keep soft water flowing during regeneration, which is where most of the price jump comes from. A metered valve keeps running costs down by regenerating only after a set number of gallons rather than on a fixed timer.
Sizing
Size decides cost, so settle it first. Peak gallons per minute sets the valve; gallons a day times grains per gallon sets the resin, with 4 to 5 gpg added per ppm of ferrous iron. A café that closes at night can run on one tank; a hotel or a car wash that refills an RO tank overnight needs twin-alternating or multi-tank. Our commercial softener sizing guide works the numbers for three sites: a café at 6,000 grains a day, a 60-room hotel at 57,600 and a car wash at 118,125.
Costs
Buying the system
| Configuration | SoftPro Pro Series (SoftPro store) | Pentair Fleck commercial (QWT) | Soft water during regeneration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single tank | 81,000–135,000 grains, from $2,179 | 2900S NXT2, 150,000–600,000 grains, from $5,355 | No |
| Twin / duplex (small) | Duplex 81,000–189,000 grains, from $5,299 | 9100 SXT twin, 24,000–110,000 grains, from $1,448 | Yes |
| Twin / duplex (large) | n/a | 9500 SXT twin from $5,779; 2900S NXT2 duplex from $9,845 | Yes |
| Triplex | 81,000–189,000 grains, from $7,749 | n/a | Yes |
| Quadraplex | 81,000–270,000 grains, from $10,189 | n/a | Yes |
| Very high flow duplex | n/a | 3900 NXT2, 450,000–1,200,000 grains, from $17,100 | Yes |
For context, the top SoftPro configuration, a 270,000-grain quadraplex, is listed at $30,149, and the largest QWT Fleck 3900 NXT2 duplex at $32,770 (both as of October 2026). Competitor pricing as of October 2026: US Water Systems lists its 1-inch Matrixx Bluetooth commercial softener at $1,795.95 and its Fleck 2900 2-inch single tank from $4,680. Culligan prices its commercial systems by dealer quote only.
Installing it
Installation is quoted separately and varies more than the hardware. What pushes it up:
- Pipe size and distance. A 3-inch Fleck 3900 needs very different work from a 3/4-inch 9100 SXT.
- Drain capacity. The drain must take backwash flow; QWT lists an 8.5 gpm backwash on the small 9100 SXT versus 100 gpm on the 3-inch 3900.
- Power and controls. The SoftPro HE Excel controller needs 120V and can run interlock and auxiliary outputs.
- Pre-treatment. A carbon filter for chlorinated city water, or an iron or sulfur filter for well water, adds equipment and labor.
- Code and permits. Backflow, air gaps and drain rules vary by city.
SoftPro says installers who already work on common residential equipment can fit and service its commercial units, which widens the pool of installers you can get quotes from. Quality Water Treatment lists financing on both commercial lines and leasing on the SoftPro Pro Series, through its partner Unisource Capital.
Running it
Salt is the main running cost. Example assumption: about 1 lb of salt per 3,000 grains removed at an efficient setting (actual dose depends on the valve's salt setting). Using the sizing guide's three sites and a bag price of $5 to $10 (40 lb):
- Café, 6,000 grains/day: 6,000 ÷ 3,000 = 2 lb/day; 60 lb per 30 days = 1.5 bags, about $7.50 to $15 a month.
- 60-room hotel, 57,600 grains/day: 57,600 ÷ 3,000 = 19.2 lb/day; 576 lb per 30 days = 14.4 bags, about $72 to $144 a month.
- Car wash, 118,125 grains/day: 118,125 ÷ 3,000 = about 39.4 lb/day; about 1,181 lb per 30 days = about 29.5 bags, roughly $148 to $295 a month.
Switching to potassium chloride removes the added sodium, but a bag costs several times as much and the dose rises by roughly 10 to 25%; see salt vs potassium. Add the cost of regeneration water and drain charges at your local rate.
Efficiency can shrink those numbers. In one customer case study published for the SoftPro Pro Series, a car wash, the high-efficiency design used 50% less salt and up to 38% less water than a traditional system, with 47% lower operating costs; the listing notes that savings in other applications may vary. QWT credits the Fleck 9100 SXT with up to 15% salt savings, since its alternating design needs no reserve setting.

Installation and upkeep
Budget for upkeep from day one. Salt is weekly or monthly work; a yearly brine tank clean-out and check for salt bridges is cheap insurance. Control valves are serviceable with seals and pistons, so a worn valve rarely means a new system. Expect resin to give roughly 10 to 15 years on well water and fewer where the city chlorinates, and re-bedding costs far less than a new system (see resin replacement). With care, the softener as a whole commonly runs 10 to 20 years. Warranty terms are not published on either commercial listing, so get them in writing before you buy. Common questions
How much does a small commercial water softener cost?
As of October 2026, a SoftPro Pro Series single tank starts from $2,179 and the QWT Fleck 9100 SXT twin from $1,448. Add installation, which depends on pipe size, drain access and local code.
How much does a large multi-tank system cost?
Large twin and multi-tank systems typically run $10,000 to $30,000 or more before installation. A SoftPro quadraplex starts from $10,189, and QWT's Fleck 3900 NXT2 duplex from $17,100, as of October 2026.
What does it cost to run a commercial softener each month?
Mostly salt, plus regeneration water. Using our example assumption of 1 lb of salt per 3,000 grains, a hotel removing 57,600 grains a day uses about 14 bags a month, roughly $72 to $144 at $5 to $10 a bag.
Is a twin-tank system worth the extra cost?
If soft water is needed 24 hours a day, yes. A single tank either bypasses hard water or stops while it regenerates, which is a problem for hotels, care homes and car washes with overnight RO refills.
Can financing spread the cost?
Quality Water Treatment lists financing for the Pentair Fleck and SoftPro commercial lines and leasing for the SoftPro Pro Series, through its partner Unisource Capital. Rates and terms are not published on the product pages, so ask before ordering.
