Verdict

The Elite is SoftPro's high-efficiency softener and our top residential pick. It suits households with genuinely hard water (7 gpg and up) that want soft water at every tap, a demand-metered valve, and an iron-filter or carbon-filter bundle from one seller. It is a real ion-exchange softener, so water tests soft after treatment, unlike a salt-free conditioner.

Verdict at a glance

Buy it if

Homes on hard well or city water, 1 to about 6 people, that want metered regeneration, a long warranty on the valve, and a DIY-friendly install with a bypass included.

Skip it if

Small households on mildly hard water who want the lowest price, homes that need more than 64,000 grains, or anyone who wants a third-party performance certification printed on the listing.

How it works

Like every salt-based unit, the Elite swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium on resin beads, then rinses the resin with brine and flushes it to drain. The control counts gallons and regenerates only when the resin nears exhaustion, not on a fixed calendar. Our guide to how a water softener works covers the chemistry.

SoftPro's efficiency pitch rests on "precision brining": the valve pre-makes only 70% of the brine and, SoftPro states, saves up to 30% more salt. SoftPro also states that a typical home goes through a single 40-lb bag in 2 to 4 months. Treat both as maker claims; your hardness, household size and salt setting decide real use.

The two versions regenerate differently. The well model uses a downflow valve tuned for variable well water, and SoftPro says it regenerates about every 4 to 7 days. The city model brines upflow, skips up to 10 backwash cycles on clean municipal water, and refills the brine tank with softened water; SoftPro says it regenerates about every 14 days on average.

Shared control features on both: vacation mode, an auto reserve, an auto system refresh, and a capacitor that keeps settings for 48 hours in a power cut. You need a drain and a 110V outlet within reach.

Sizing and models

Pick the version by water source first, then the grain size. Daily load is people × about 75 gallons × hardness in gpg. A family of four on 15 gpg uses roughly 4,500 grains a day, so a 48,000-grain unit (about 1.5 times the weekly load) is the smallest that suits an efficient salt setting, and 64,000 gives more headroom. Iron counts too: add about 4 to 5 gpg for every 1 ppm of ferrous iron. Our sizing guide walks through the math.

  • Well water, hardness only: Elite well, softener only. The option is labelled "hardness only (no iron or odor issues)".
  • Well water with iron, manganese or rotten-egg odor: the AIO Iron Master bundle. SoftPro states its Katalox Light media removes up to 30 ppm iron, up to 7 ppm manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. Those limits belong to the filter, not the softener. Bundle prices are keyed to your well pump's flow (6–7, 8–10 or 11+ gpm).
  • City water: Elite city. Add the Gold carbon filter if chlorine or chloramine bothers you, since chlorine shortens resin life. Gold+ adds a fluoride filter.

The largest residential Elite SoftPro sells is 64,000 grains. Very large homes or heavy iron loads may need a twin-tank or commercial system instead.

Current listings: Elite for well water (a store we own) and Elite for city water (a store we own). The well bundle with the AIO Iron Master runs from $2,827 to $3,367 depending on size and pump flow. City Gold bundles start at $2,447 and Gold+ at $2,607. Shipping is listed as free from SoftPro's Texas, Arizona and Indiana warehouses, and the unit is listed as assembled in the USA. Install cost is extra if you hire it out; SoftPro's city page puts a handyman or plumber at typically $150 to $300, and our cost guide gives wider ranges.

SoftPro's warranty covers the control valve and "essential components" for a limited lifetime, and a 6-month money-back guarantee sits on top. The listing carries an "NSF / WQA / ANSI Certified" bullet, but no standard number, certificate or scope appears anywhere on it, so we read it as a badge rather than a certified performance claim.

Pros and cons

Pro: metered, efficiency-focused valve

Demand regeneration plus precision brining; SoftPro claims up to 30% more salt saved.

Pro: right version for your source

Downflow well model and upflow city model, rather than one valve for everything.

Pro: one-order bundles

Iron, sulfur and chlorine pre-treatment can ship with the softener.

Con: unscoped certification

The listing names NSF, WQA and ANSI but no standard, certificate or scope.

Con: flow rate not published

SoftPro gives no gpm figure for the softener itself.

Con: priced above budget units

Entry price is higher than big-box softeners and some online brands.

How it compares

The Elite ranks #1 in our best water softeners list and leads best for well water. On city water it sits #2 behind its cheaper sibling; see the SoftPro ECO review if you have 3/4" plumbing and a smaller budget.

Fair alternatives from other brands:

  • SpringWell Salt Based Softener (SS1/SS4/SS+): 32K, 48K and 80K grains with published 11 to 20 gpm service flow and a lifetime warranty badge; from $1,606.50 as of October 2026. The 80K size covers homes beyond the Elite's 64,000-grain top end. See SoftPro vs SpringWell.
  • US Water Systems Matrixx: 35,000 to 70,000 grains, Bluetooth app with usage reports, lifetime tank and resin warranty plus 10 years on valve and electronics; from $1,295.95.
  • Aquasana SimplySoft: 40,000 or 60,000 grains, and Aquasana publishes IAPMO certification to NSF/ANSI 44 covering hardness, something the Elite listing does not claim; from $1,698.

Common questions

Is the SoftPro Elite good for well water?

Yes, that is what the well version is built for: a downflow valve, 10% crosslink resin and an optional fine mesh upgrade for elevated ferrous iron. For more than a trace of iron, sulfur odor or manganese, buy the AIO Iron Master bundle so the filter handles those before the softener.

How much salt does the Elite use?

SoftPro's own figure is a 40-lb bag lasting a typical household 2 to 4 months, with precision brining credited for up to 30% more salt saved. Actual use depends on hardness, people and your salt setting. Pellets or solar crystals at $5 to $10 a bag keep running costs modest.

What is the difference between the city and well Elite?

The city model has an upflow valve, refills brine with soft water and skips backwash cycles on clean municipal water. The well model has a downflow valve set up for variable well water and pairs with an iron filter. Grain sizes are the same.

Is the Elite a DIY install?

SoftPro says most homeowners finish in 2 to 4 hours with basic plumbing tools. You need a bypass (included), a drain line and a 110V outlet. Our installation guide lists the steps and code points.

Does the Elite come in 80,000 grains?

No. SoftPro sells 32,000, 40,000, 48,000 and 64,000-grain sizes. If your daily load would need more, look at a twin-tank or commercial system.
