Salt and water savings are the makers' own claims, named as such. When a figure is not published, we say so instead of guessing.
Most weight went to four things you live with for a decade or two. A metered (demand) valve regenerates by gallons used rather than by the calendar. A wide capacity range lets you size correctly for your household and hardness; our sizing guide shows the math. Warranty terms on the control valve matter because that is the part most likely to need service. And clear iron guidance matters because many hard-water homes carry some. A valve or resin listing is not a whole-system certification, and we keep the two apart.

SoftPro sells the Elite in four sizes, 32,000 through 64,000 grains, and in two builds. The well build uses a downflow valve programmed for variable well water and 1-inch internal plumbing, from $1,327 as of October 2026. The city build switches to an upflow valve and starts at $1,367. Both list 10% high-capacity resin. Coverage on both: the control valve and essential components are under a limited lifetime warranty, and SoftPro adds a 6-month money-back guarantee.
The valve earns the top spot. It offers vacation mode, an automatic reserve, an automatic refresh cycle and a capacitor that holds settings through 48 hours without power. SoftPro states its precision brining pre-makes only 70% of the brine for up to 30% more salt saved, and that a typical household goes through one 40-lb bag every 2 to 4 months. On the well build, SoftPro offers an AIO Iron Master bundle from $2,827, which it says handles iron up to 30 ppm, manganese up to 7 ppm, and hydrogen sulfide; the softener-only option is labeled for hardness only.

Quality Water Treatment, which its site says was founded in 1990, builds this conventional two-tank softener around a Pentair Fleck 5600SXT valve. Five sizes span 24,000–64,000 grains; the smallest costs $1,189 as of October 2026. The valve is digitally metered with a paddle-wheel meter, a backlit display and 48 hours of capacitor backup, and it ships pre-programmed. The resin is 10% cross-linked, which QWT calls more chlorine resistant, with an SST-60 upgrade on offer.
Two things put it second. The 24,000-grain size fits one- and two-person homes below the Elite's smallest unit, and the terms are simple: 10 years on the tanks, 5 years on the Fleck valve. That is shorter than SoftPro's valve coverage. QWT is frank about efficiency, too. It says the valve cuts salt by up to 40% against outdated systems yet still uses more than high-efficiency upflow designs, and roughly 12 gallons of water per regeneration. SoftPro states it uses 10% less salt than traditional systems.

Beyond maximum ratings of 35,000, 53,000 and 70,000 grains, the maker lists efficiency ratings of 15,000, 22,500 and 30,000 grains at 3, 4.5 and 6 lb of salt, so you see the trade-off up front. Peak flow in the spec table is 12, 17 and 22 gpm. It lists a WQA Gold Seal certified control valve, NSF certified 10% resin and a Bluetooth app.

How to choose
Choose by water source first, then size, then valve. Well owners should read our well water roundup for iron filters and pH, and city homes our city water picks for chlorine and chloramine protection.
Get a number for hardness
Use a test strip, a lab test or your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report. On a well, test iron, manganese and pH as well.
Work out weekly grains
A family of four on 12 gpg water needs 3,600 grains daily, near 25,200 weekly, so a 40k unit, about 1.6 times that load, leaves headroom at an efficient salt setting.
Fit the valve to the pipe
3/4-inch valves suit most smaller homes. 1-inch plumbing, several bathrooms or high flow call for a 1-inch valve.
Split the warranty
Valve, electronics and tanks often carry different terms. Lifetime on tanks alone is not lifetime on the valve.
Count running costs
Professional installation typically adds about $200 to $1,000, and pellets or solar salt cost roughly $5 to $10 a bag.

Is a bigger softener always better?

Can one softener handle iron too?
Only a little iron, and only the dissolved clear-water kind: usually a few ppm, inside whatever limit the maker states. Red or orange oxidized iron, iron bacteria, higher iron and rotten-egg sulfur need their own filter ahead of the softener.
How much sodium does softening add?
Each gpg of hardness removed adds roughly 7.5 to 8 mg per liter, so softening 15 gpg water adds around 113 to 120 mg/L. Switching to potassium chloride, leaving one cold tap unsoftened or fitting reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink avoids most of it; ask a doctor before using softened water for infant formula.
What upkeep does a salt softener need?
Once a year, look inside the brine tank, clean it if needed and break up any salt bridge, and use clean pellets or solar crystals rather than rock salt. Valves take replacement seals and pistons, and the unit commonly lasts 10 to 20 years.
