Water Softener Cost: Buying and Installing

A water softener costs roughly $500 to $3,500 for a residential salt-based unit, plus about $200 to $1,000 if a professional installs it. Salt then runs a few dollars a month for most households.

Quick answer

  • Residential salt-based units: roughly $500–$3,500 before installation.
  • Professional installation: typically about $200–$1,000, depending on plumbing and code.
  • Salt: about $5–$10 for a 40-lb bag.
  • Most families of four use under one bag a month on efficient settings.
  • Commercial: small single-tank units start in the low thousands; big setups pass $10,000.

What drives the price

The price of the box tracks four things: grain capacity, valve quality, tank count and what is bundled with it.

Capacity adds less than people expect. SoftPro's ECO City runs from $967 for 32,000 grains to $1,447 for 64,000 grains as of October 2026, so sizing up for a large family rarely doubles the bill. Size first with our grain calculator table, then price.

Valve and build separate budget units from two-tank systems. Budget models, including all-in-one cabinet designs that put the resin tank inside the salt cabinet, sell for a few hundred dollars. Two-tank systems use a separate brine tank and a serviceable control valve, such as Fleck's 5600SXT or SoftPro's own valves, and usually cost $950 to $1,600 for the softener alone.

Bundles add filters for problems a softener does not fix. On city water, a carbon stage handles chlorine and chloramine and protects the resin. On wells, an iron filter goes ahead of the softener when iron is high or oxidized.

Salt-free conditioners cost less to run because they need no salt, drain or power, but they do not remove hardness. Our salt-based vs salt-free guide explains what you give up.

Installation and running costs

Installation. A professional install typically adds about $200 to $1,000. The low end is a straight swap where the old softener's loop, drain and outlet are already in place. The high end means new piping into the main line, a long drain run, an electrical outlet or permit and code work. For its city-water Elite, SoftPro states a handyman or plumber install is typically $150 to $300. DIY costs less: you need a bypass valve (many systems include one), fittings for your pipe type, drain tubing and a few hours. Our DIY install guide walks through it.

Salt. This is the main running cost. Here is how we estimate it: monthly grains removed ÷ grains recovered per pound of salt. Efficient metered softeners recover around 5,000 grains per pound; GE lists 5,090 for its GXSH45W, and US Water Systems' MXX-100 setting of 15,000 grains on 3 lb works out to the same. Older timer units and heavy salt settings recover less, so they use more.

Estimated salt use at about 5,000 grains per lb (30-day month)
HouseholdHardnessGrains/monthSalt/month40-lb bags/monthCost/month at $5–$10 a bag

4 people10 gpg90,00018 lbabout 0.5about $2–$5
4 people20 gpg180,00036 lbabout 0.9about $5–$9
6 people20 gpg270,00054 lbabout 1.4about $7–$14

Treat these as estimates, not quotes: your salt setting, real water use and any iron change the result. For comparison, SoftPro says one 40-lb bag lasts a typical Elite household 2 to 4 months. Potassium chloride avoids the added sodium, but a bag runs several times the price of salt and you need roughly 10–25% more of it; see salt vs potassium.

Water and power. Each regeneration sends water to the drain: the Fleck 5600SXT uses about 12 gallons per cycle according to QWT, and the Rheem RHS32 is listed at 24. Weekly regeneration means roughly 50 to 100 gallons a month. The valve's electricity draw is small.

Upkeep. Budget for a replacement carbon cartridge if you filter city water and, after 10 to 15 years on a well, possibly a resin re-bed.

Where buyers overspend or underspend

Buying on box price alone

A cheap unit on a heavy salt setting can cost more over ten years than a pricier efficient one.

Skipping the pre-filter on city water

Chlorine shortens resin life, and a re-bed costs more than a filter cartridge.

Undersizing to save a few hundred dollars

The capacity step-up is small; frequent regeneration wastes salt and water for years.

Forgetting install extras

A drain run, outlet or loop can add more than the gap between two models.

Common questions

How much does it cost to install a water softener?

Typically about $200 to $1,000 for professional installation, depending on whether a loop, drain and outlet already exist and on local code. A straight replacement sits at the low end. DIY costs only parts and your time, especially if the system includes a bypass valve.

Is a more expensive softener worth it?

Often, if the extra money buys efficiency, a serviceable valve and a longer warranty. Compare salt use and warranty terms, not just the purchase price.

How much does salt cost per year?

With four people, 10 gpg water and an efficient setting, expect about half a 40-lb bag a month, or roughly $25 to $55 a year at $5–$10 a bag. Very hard water or iron can double that.

Do salt-free systems cost less to run?

Yes, there is no salt, drain water or electricity. Media still needs replacing on the maker's schedule, and the water stays hard.

What does a commercial softener cost?

Small single-tank commercial units start in the low thousands. Big twin, triplex or quad systems commonly land between $10,000 and $30,000, sometimes higher, and installation is extra. Our commercial cost guide has details.

Where to compare prices

Our best water softeners for 2026 roundup compares price, capacity and warranty side by side, SoftPro first. For city water on a budget, the SoftPro ECO City water softener (a store we own) starts at $967 as of October 2026 for 32,000 grains, uses 8% crosslink resin, and SoftPro backs the tanks with a lifetime limited warranty and the valve for 10 years. Its page claims a 10% salt saving over traditional systems.
