How we chose
Campground water changes from one stop to the next, from soft city supply to hard well water, so an RV softener has to be portable, quick to recharge and easy to store. We compared the two portable softeners whose makers or sellers publish current specs: capacity, gallons between regenerations, how to recharge, size, warranty and price as of October 2026. Owned products are listed first; the competitor gets credit for every strength its listing states.
Other portable brands exist, but we could not find current, first-party specs for them, so they are left off rather than described from old data.
#1 SoftPro portable RV softener (QWT)
The SoftPro portable RV softener, sold by Quality Water Treatment, is a small resin tank with hose fittings at the top. It needs no power and no drain. QWT lists two sizes: 8,000 grains, described as for "1 person part time," at $267, and 16,000 grains, for "2 people part time," at $308 (prices as of October 2026).
QWT's spec table gives 800 gallons of soft water between regenerations for the 8,000 model and 1,680 gallons for the 16,000 model. Those numbers line up with simple arithmetic on 10 gpg water: 8,000 grains divided by 10 gpg is 800 gallons. On harder campground water you get proportionally fewer gallons, so treat the published figures as a starting point.
Recharging uses table salt: about 1 cup for the 8,000 model and about 2 cups for the 16,000, per QWT. Quick hose connections are included, and hookup uses two adapters (male and female). The 8,000 tank measures 21.5 inches tall by 6 inches wide; the 16,000 is 21.5 by 10. An optional spin-down sediment separator is sold as an upgrade, which is worth considering at campgrounds with sandy well water. Tank color is black or almond depending on stock.
The warranty is the standout: "Limited lifetime warranty on the tank and valve," plus QWT's store-wide 6-month money-back guarantee. Flow rate, resin type and certifications are not published.

#2 On The Go OTG4 portable
On The Go's current models are the OTG4 generation, sold through a large RV retailer. The Standard (OTG4-CW-SS) holds 8,000 grains and measures 22 inches tall by 7-3/4 inches across, at 18 lb. The Double Standard (OTG4-CW-DS) holds 16,000 grains, 22 by 9-1/2 inches, at about 34 lb.
The listing says the Standard recharges with "1 box of common table salt in under 15 minutes, providing soft water up to 20 days." The Double Standard takes two boxes in under 30 minutes and is rated for 1,600 gallons, or up to 40 days. Flow rate is not published, though the listing says it is engineered for high flow with very low pressure drop.
Its genuine strengths are price and simplicity: from $189.91 as of October 2026, no tools or electricity, a standard hose hookup, and included hardness test strips and a back-flush adapter. Warranty and certifications are not published on the listing, which is the main reason it ranks second.
The rest of the list
No other portable RV softener had current published specs we could source, so this list stops at two. If a full-time rig has room, power and a drain, a small cabinet or single-tank softener is another route; size it with the water softener sizing guide like any household unit.
If the real problem is spotting on the rig after washing, a softener helps. If it is rotten-egg smell, rust stains or sediment, you need filtration first, not a softener; our guide to water softeners for iron and sulfur explains the difference. A salt-free conditioner is not a substitute on the road: it does not remove hardness and is not built for unknown well water (see salt-free conditioners).
How to choose
Start with how many people travel and how long you stay hooked up. Use the published gallons as your budget: a couple using 40 gallons a day on 10 gpg water would get about 20 days from the 16,000-grain SoftPro (1,680 gallons) before it needs salt. Halve that on 20 gpg water.
Check the hardness at each new campground with a test strip. Strips read in gpg or mg/L (17.1 mg/L is one gpg), and a result above 10.5 gpg is very hard. That number tells you how soon to recharge. The basics of how resin swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium are in how a water softener works.
Plan for sodium. Every gpg of hardness the resin takes out puts back roughly 7.5–8 mg/L of sodium, so 15 gpg water picks up over 110 mg/L. If anyone aboard watches sodium, keep a separate drinking-water source; our guide on drinking softened water covers the options.
Size for your crew
Pick 8,000 grains for one person or short trips; 16,000 grains for two people or long stays.
Recharge routine
Both recharge with table salt; flush the brine out fully before connecting the RV again.
Hose order
Run the hose from the spigot through any sediment filter, then the softener, then the rig.
Storage
Both tanks stand about 22 inches tall; measure your bay before buying the wider model.
Warranty
SoftPro lists a limited lifetime warranty on tank and valve; On The Go's warranty is not published.
Freezing can crack tanks and fittings, so drain the softener before cold nights and store it indoors over winter. Use a hose rated for drinking water on both sides of the softener.

Common questions
Do RV water softeners really work?
Yes, portable RV softeners use the same ion-exchange resin as home units, just in a smaller tank. They remove calcium and magnesium until the resin is used up, then you recharge them with salt. They do not remove iron, sulfur smell or sediment in any meaningful amount.
How often do you regenerate an RV water softener?
It depends on hardness and how much water you use. QWT lists 800 gallons for its 8,000-grain model and 1,680 gallons for its 16,000-grain model between regenerations. On very hard water you will recharge sooner.
Can you use table salt in an RV softener?
Yes. Both the SoftPro and On The Go portables are designed to recharge with ordinary table salt. QWT gives about 1 cup for the 8,000 and 2 cups for the 16,000; On The Go's listing calls for one or two boxes.
What size RV water softener is best?
For one person or weekend trips, 8,000 grains is usually enough. For two people, full-time travel or very hard water, the 16,000-grain size runs longer between recharges and costs only modestly more.
Does an RV softener lower water pressure?
Flow rates are not published for either portable here. On The Go says its unit is engineered for very low pressure drop. Keep the inlet hose short and use a sediment filter ahead of the softener so the resin bed doesn't clog.
