Verdict

The ECO is the SoftPro to buy when the budget is tighter than the Elite's and the home has standard 3/4" plumbing. It is a true salt-based softener with demand (metered) regeneration, so hardness actually comes out of the water. It ranks #1 in our best for city water list on price and warranty terms, and #3 for well water.

ECO verdict box

Who it suits

City or well homes on 3/4" lines with hard water, 1 to 6 people, that want a metered softener with a pre-installed bypass and a simple install.

Who should skip

Homes with 1" plumbing or high flow demand (SoftPro itself points those to the Elite), anyone needing a 40,000-grain middle size, and buyers who want a published third-party certification.

Specifications

Two product pages make up the ECO line. They differ more than the shared name suggests, especially on resin and warranty wording.

How it works

The ECO softens by ion exchange: resin beads hold sodium and trade it for calcium and magnesium, and a brine rinse recharges them. A meter tracks gallons used, so the unit regenerates on demand rather than on a timer. The how a softener works guide explains each cycle.

On the city model, SoftPro describes a System Refresh (a 15-minute regeneration if capacity drops under 3%), a 15% auto reserve, a 48-hour capacitor backup, and a distribution riser using what it calls Vortech technology. SoftPro rates those 8% crosslink beads for as long as two decades of normal service. Chlorine still wears resin, so the Gold carbon package is worth a look on chloraminated supplies.

The well model swaps in fine mesh resin, which SoftPro says captures dissolved iron better than standard resin. The page is explicit that iron above 0.3 ppm calls for the Softener + Pro Iron Filter package, which it describes as "required, not optional." No ppm limit is published for the softener alone, so plan on the filter if your test shows iron, manganese or sulfur odor.

SoftPro's salt claim for the ECO is modest. The well page says up to 10% less salt than older or conventional systems, and the city page says 10% less salt than traditional systems. That is a third of the Elite's claim, which matters if salt cost or discharge rules drive your choice.

Sizing and models

Start with daily grains: people × roughly 75 gallons × hardness (gpg). Three people on 12 gpg need about 2,700 grains a day, and a 32,000-grain ECO covers that with a sensible weekly cycle. Five or six people on 15 gpg sit near 6,000 grains a day, which points to the 48,000 or 64,000. Each 1 ppm of clear-water iron adds about 4 to 5 gpg to the hardness you size for. Our sizing guide has worked examples.

  • ECO City, softener only: hard municipal water, no taste complaints.
  • ECO City Gold: adds the Chlorine+ catalytic carbon filter. SoftPro's filter claim (up to 98% of listed contaminants) applies to that filter, not the softener.
  • ECO City Gold+: Gold plus a bone-char stage for fluoride.
  • ECO Well, softener only: hardness with little or no iron (under 0.3 ppm).
  • ECO Well + Pro Iron Filter: iron, manganese or odor. Price depends on your pump's flow band (6–7, 8–10, 11+ gpm).

There is no 40,000-grain ECO; the line jumps from 32,000 to 48,000.

Listings: ECO City (a store we own) and ECO Well (a store we own).

Read the warranty lines closely. ECO City gives lifetime limited coverage on the mineral tank and brine tank, 10 years on the control valve, and lifetime technical support. ECO Well is described as a "Lifetime Limited Warranty" with the note that it is subject to coverage and general conditions. Both carry a 6-month money-back guarantee. Neither ECO page lists any NSF, WQA or ANSI certification, so we report none. For install and running costs, see water softener cost.

Pros and cons

ECO pros and cons

Pro: lowest SoftPro entry price

From $947 for a metered softener with a pre-installed bypass.

Pro: source-specific resin

8% crosslink on city water; fine mesh for dissolved iron on wells.

Pro: clear iron guidance

SoftPro states when the iron filter becomes mandatory (above 0.3 ppm).

Con: 3/4" plumbing focus

SoftPro sends 1" or high-flow homes to the Elite.

Con: smaller salt claim

Up to 10% versus the Elite's up to 30%.

Con: no certification listed

Neither page names any certification.

How it compares

Against its sibling, the SoftPro Elite adds a 1" valve, a 40,000-grain size, upflow brining on city water and a bigger salt claim, for roughly $400 more at the 32,000-grain size. The ECO ranks #3 in our overall best water softeners list.

Alternatives worth weighing:

  • US Water Systems Flexx-HD: 35,000 to 70,000 grains with upflow brining and a ceramic disc valve covered for 7 years (valve and electronics), from $951.95 as of October 2026. Close to the ECO on price with larger sizes.
  • Aquasure Harmony: from $539.99 for 32,000 grains, and its fine mesh variants are rated by the maker to 10 ppm iron. Base warranty terms are not published.
  • GE GXSH45W: 45,000 grains, 9.5 gpm service flow, Wi-Fi leak detection and published efficiency figures, $799. Warranty is 1 year on the whole appliance and 10 years on the resin tank.

Common questions

Is the SoftPro ECO a real water softener?

Yes. It removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange and regenerates with salt, so treated water tests soft. That is different from salt-free conditioners, which leave hardness in the water.

ECO or Elite: which one fits?

Pick the ECO for 3/4" plumbing, a moderate household and a lower budget. Pick the Elite for 1" plumbing, larger homes, or when salt efficiency matters most. SoftPro recommends the Elite for higher-flow homes.

Does the ECO Well remove iron?

Its fine mesh resin is aimed at dissolved iron, but SoftPro publishes no ppm limit for the softener alone. Above 0.3 ppm iron, SoftPro says the Pro Iron Filter package is required.

How long does the ECO resin last?

SoftPro puts the ECO City's 8% crosslink resin at up to two decades in normal service. Chlorinated water shortens resin life, which is one reason to consider the Gold carbon package.

What does the ECO warranty cover?

ECO City: lifetime limited coverage for both tanks, 10 years on the valve, and lifetime tech support. ECO Well: a lifetime limited warranty subject to SoftPro's conditions. Both add a 6-month money-back guarantee.
